“Rock of Ages” Movie Review

Do you like rock and rock? Do you like movies? If you answered both to both of those questions you should definitely see “Rock of Ages”.

Maybe it’s a little too long, at an hour and three minutes, but you will be dancing in your seat once you’ve finished your large tub of popcorn and your large diet soda (gotta keep things balanced, right?). The movie was a fun treat.

We don’t see a whole lot of Tom Cruise lately, but when we do see him he’s amazing.  His performance as Stacee Jaxx is no exception.  His body is lean and ripped, and he admitted to working out with a personal trainer for five hours a day for at least six months prior to filming.  Go Tom! You look amazing and you work hard to get that way.  He also did all his own singing and reportedly also worked with a voice coach to make this happen.

Overall, the cast is terrific.  Diego Boneta (whom I have never seen before) is adorable as a bar back wanna-be rocker.  And let’s talk about Julianne Hough.  The camera loves her! She is young, gorgeous and engaging.  Her voice is beautiful.  You will fall in love with her, playing a just off the bus girl from Tulsa, Oklahoma, with a dream of becoming a singer in Hollywood.  (Go Ryan Seacrest!!!)

Alec Baldwin was great as an aging rock and roll club owner.  He sings too, and he’s very cute with his long straggly hair.  Russell Brand? Well… he plays the same part he always plays.  Catherine Zeta-Jones? Didn’t love her in the part.  However, I did love Malin Akerman (I always love Malin Ackerman).  I’m not even going to tell you about her part because it’s just too adorable and I don’t want to ruin it.

In typical Broadway musical style, this movie entertains throughout.  The characters have their highs and lows, and everything ends happily ever after.  My husband and I give it two thumbs up.
