Book Review: “The Leftovers” by Tom Perrotta

Tonight the clocks fall behind so you get an extra hour of sleep.  If you need something to read I have just the book — “The Leftovers” by Tom Perrotta.  It’s fantastic!

I just finished it one minute ago.  Now I am feeling that mixture of love for the author and disappointment that there are no more pages to turn (or in the case of the kindle, arrows to push).  This book was a great read from start to finish.

Focused around a small northeast town, Perrotta tells the tale of the survivors (the leftovers), after a phenomenon has stripped the world of people, seemingly randomly.  Yes, the people just disappeared, leaving those who knew them questioning why those who disappeared were chosen, and why they were not.

Perrotta focuses on multiple characters, and each and every one of them is tragic and interesting.  Children who have lost their parents, parents who have lost their children, survivors who choose to join bizarre cultlike groups, trying to make sense out of what has transpired and what it all means.

This book is entertaining.  It is well written.  It is intelligent.

I have two thumbs, so I will hereby rate this book with Two Thumbs Up.  Read it if you enjoy fiction at all.  I think you will love it.
