Here is what I do when I want to go to a restaurant and can’t get a reservation. This is especially helpful and effective when dealing with brand new trendy restaurants who want you to think that you will never be able to get in. When you call for a reservation you are told,
“We have 5:30 or 10:30.”
Who eats at 5:30 or 10:30 p.m.?
Also, who knows what they are going to want to eat a month ahead of time? Sometimes I don’t know what I feel like until it is mealtime, let alone weeks in advance. Indian food on May 26th at 7:30? Oh yes, that sounds perfect. Sushi on June 3rd? Definitely.
I don’t think so.
Anyway. Here’s my trick. Just go. Don’t worry about reservations. Every restaurant holds tables for house guests, celebrities, whatever. I do it all the time.
Last night we went to Osteria Morini with friends. We had all tried to make a reservation there for the past several weeks, as it was our friends’ anniversary.
“5:30 or 10:30,” we were all told.
So we walked in at 7. They had a table ten minutes later. We weren’t ready. Ten minutes after that they had another table for us.
Have reservations? Don’t. It really works.
